This week on the Get More Smarter Podcast…again, is one of the very most interesting, informative, hilarious, candid, and smarterest conversations we’ve ever had on the show.
Congresswoman Jasmine Felicia Crockett, born on March 29, 1981, in St. Louis, Missouri, is a dedicated public servant representing Texas's 30th congressional district since 2023. Crockett, a Democrat, began her career focused on social justice after attending Rhodes College and earning her Juris Doctor from the University of Houston Law Center. Initially working as a civil rights attorney, she later served as a public defender in Bowie County, Texas, and established her own law firm which, among many other cases, took on pro bono cases for Black Lives Matter advocates.
Crockett entered the political arena by challenging the incumbent Democrat in the 100th District of the Texas Legislature in 2020, winning her election and serving one term. During her time in the Texas House, she distinguished herself as a vocal advocate for civil liberties, fighting against restrictive voting and criminal justice legislation. She was notably a breakout star of the 2021 Texas House Quorum Break, aimed at stopping the State of Texas from enacting restrictive voting measures.
In Congress, Crockett champions issues like healthcare, voting rights, economic opportunity, and civil liberties. She has committed to building on the legacy of her predecessor, the late, great Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, and advocates for expanded social safety programs and rights for diverse communities across Texas. Crockett is recognized as one of the few Black women in Democratic House Leadership and is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.
