Episode 216: In Which We Discuss Quadfectas and Underwater Alien Bases

A rogue's gallery of cabinet freaks, a bad week for two top-tier Colorado Democrats, the Bread Sandwich may be stranger than we initially knew, and we're on BLUESKY!

A colorful political cartoon depicting an underwater alien base. The scene features a futuristic alien structure with glowing lights and unusual architecture, surrounded by marine life like fish, coral reefs, and seaweed. The aliens are humorously dressed in scuba gear, interacting with Earth-style gadgets like televisions and coffee makers. A banner on the base reads 'Area 52' in bold, quirky letters. The setting has a vibrant, playful tone, with lighthearted elements like a sign pointing to 'Earth Invasion Plans' and another to 'Alien Cafe.' The ocean is depicted with bright blues and greens, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere.

With that out of the way, THIS WEEK on our Colorado politics podcast, we have finished grieving, eating entire cartons of ice cream, started drinking again, and are almost nearly ready to think about how to fight back for the next four fucking years, again.

Our episode this week begins with an examination of the would-be-hilarious-if-it-weren’t-actually happening nominees to Trump’s Cabinet, which is, unbelievably bleak:

But don’t take it from us, take it from six-time Grammy Award Winner and Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame Inductee, Dionne Warwick:

Heartbreaker, indeed.

We then zoom down into the home state of the pod to check in on friend of the show Governor Jared Polis who became the main character of both the internet and kind of everything else too after trying to find a thing to be positive about the fact that Donald Trump has actually nominated antisemitic conspiracy theorist and embarrassment to his entire family, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to lead the Department of Health and Human Services and oversee the Food and Drug Administration, good lord. Reading the governor’s entire tweet may help you realize that Polis was clearly trying to articulate the fact that he agreed with RFK Jr. on lowering prescription drug costs, pesticides and “Big Ag,” and federal nutrition guidelines. Okay, it is not unreasonable or unlikely that the governor would find a few things to agree with lots of members of Trump’s team on, but the problem is that he led the tweet with the sentence “I’m excited by the news that the President-Elect will appoint RFK Jr. to HHS.” That’s the only thing people read before firing off the hot takes, and that’s probably why we’re here right now.

For a thorough analysis of all of this, we go to two other friends of the show, 9News’ Kyle Clark and Marshall Zelinger who have a deep dive on the situation for your viewing pleasure:

In a since deleted reply, RFK Jr. thanked the governor for his support with yet another would-be-hilarious-if-it-weren’t-from-a-scary-dangerous-lunatic-who-will-probably-take-flouride-out-of-the-water-if-given-the-chance:

We fucking hate it here.

Because it wouldn’t be The Worst Week Ever™️ without a second scandal involving a leading Colorado Democrat, secretly recorded audio became public this week involving an altercation between chief deputy Secretary of State Chris Beall and Adams County Clerk and Recorder Josh Zygielbaum, in which Beall says “We were not going to tell counties [about the partial BIOS password leak that, like, absolutely did not endanger the administration of the election in any way at all whatsoever, but is absolutely nightmare fuel for the election conspiracy theorists permeating Colorado’s right wing and Republican Party] because we could not tell counties without it becoming the media storm it has become.”

Yeah, man.

Back to 9News for the whole thing:

We also go over the math in the Colorado House of Representatives where Colorado Democrats traded a Supermajority they were never actually supposed to have for merely a Big-Ass Majority they currently enjoy, as long as a state house race in Colorado Springs that is currently within SEVEN VOTES stays with the Republican after the mandatory automatic recount that will occur in the next few weeks.

Finally, we pop on over to our cousin blog, ColoradoPols.com where Jason has written a deep dive on the tragic underperformance of our 8th Favorite Member of Congress From Colorado who won a district that is drawn to favor a generic Republican by 26.6% by only 11.73%, meaning that if she underperformed by as much in her old district as she did this one, she’d finally no longer be able to, among other things, ask questions about underwater alien bases during congressional hearings:

And finally, we leave you with this post of ours on Threads that got a little bit of action, giving a friendly recommendation to an outgoing Democratic Member of Congress who most likely has access to a damning report on probably-soon-to-be-Attorney-General-of-the-United-States-unless-someone-does-something-for-instance-leaks-the-Ethics-Committee-Report-that-in-all-extremely-likelihood-does-not-exonerate-him, Matt Gaetz

That’s it for us this week! If you loved listening to it as much as we loved recording it, you can thank us by subscribing to the pod wherever you listen, following us over on Nice Twitter aka Threads, and forwarding this email or sharing this post with your friends, your enemies, and your least favorite member of Donald Trump’s next cabinet! THANK YOU so much for listening, and we’ll see you next time!
